monkey's holiday book review!

i love books! everyone has a favorite book that they love to read every holiday season! it may be "the night before christmas", "the velveteen rabbit", "the grinch that stole christmas", or david sedaris's "holidays on ice", but, it's always something that makes the holidays just a little more special. this year, i have read a few books that may become one of your favorites. (books make wonderful gifts for christmas, hanukkah, valentine's day, easter, president's day, birthdays, ground hog's day, losar, monday, tuesday, wednesday, thursday, friday and of course sunday.) you may enjoy taking a few of these books out for a test drive at your local library... i know i do!

the nutcracker
by david and noelle carter

if your family is like mine, every christmas you don your ballet shoes, pack the dining room with an orchestra and perform the classic nutcracker ballet in the living room. this lovely pop-up book, the nutcracker, tells the story of the nutcracker complete with the mean little brother, the fighting mice, the handsome prince and all the enchanted food. if your are short of floor space for this years performance you can get decked out in your sugar plum fairly costume and spend the evening playing with this book. this book performs equally as well for matinees.

"truffle's christmas", has no fighting mice, but, it does have a very nice family of mice with a thoughtful little mouse named truffle. he anguishes over what he will ask santa to bring him for christmas, then regrets his choice. when he decides to wait for santa and explain to him that he has changed his mind, he finds himself in a dangerous situation. i laughed, i cried, i'm adding a hula hoop to my christmas list.

i wonder if mouse knows pig?... she's a real cutie too.

if you take a mouse to the movies
by laura numeroff and snappy illustrations by felicia bond

i really really like "if you take a mouse to the movies." i love mouse! he is so funny. what a free spirit. he really knows how to use glitter and the value of good christmas tree decorations. mouse really cracks me up and he is such a fashion trend setter with his snappy green boxer shorts resplendent with candy canes. this is certainly a cheerful book for the holiday season and a great sequel to his classic "if you give a mouse a cookie." i wonder if mouse would come help me decorate for christmas?

"the runaway latkes" is a mouse-free book. i have always suspected that latkes would make a break for it if given the opportunity. are these tasty little fugitives running to freedom or are they in search of the perfect condiment? you be the judge by whipping up a batch of latkes from the recipe at the end of this hanukkha story! Yum! gotta go! i think i see a latke trying to get out the door!

let's whip up a batch of latkes of our own, shall we?
